Menu For Hope 5

by Matt on December 15, 2008

6a00d83451bc0669e20105365fd073970c-640wiHello everyone! I'm pleased to announce this year's Menu For Hope which launches today! I'm also pleased to announce that I'm the West Coast Host this year and it's truly an honor.

So, what's Menu For Hope? It's an annual fundraising campaign hosted by Chez Pim and food bloggers from around the world. As Pim says "Five years ago, the devastating tsunami in Southeast Asia inspired me to find a way to help, and the very first Menu for Hope was born. The campaign has since become a yearly affair, raising funds to support worthy causes worldwide. In 2007, Menu for Hope raised nearly $100K to help the UN World Food Programme feed the hungry."

How amazing is that?

Each December, food bloggers from all over the world join the campaign by offering a delectable array of food-related prizes for the Menu for Hope raffle. Anyone – and that means you too – can buy raffle tickets to bid on these prizes. For every $10 donated, you earn one virtual raffle ticket to bid on a prize of their choice. At the end of the two-week campaign, the raffle tickets are drawn and the results announced on Chez Pim. It's always so exciting and thrilling to see the things offered each year, truly some of the most amazing and unique gifts you'll ever see.

And because I must acknowledge the obvious, let me just say that this past year has been tough for so many. The economy and our global financial crisis has been difficult but I know we'll all pull through. And even when faced with tough times it's important to realize that we're nothing but brothers and sisters, each and every one of us. No matter where you are. Or who you are. And this is what unites us and why we must help each other when we can.

If you want to read more about Menu For Hope please visit Pim for all the information.

So, want to know more about the prizes being offered by the West Coast partners? Let's do this!

(update: Because many of the donations are still trickling in I'm putting as much pertinent info as possible. Some stuff may be missing and I'll update accordingly but I suggest you visit the respective blogs for all the current listings and info. I don't want you to miss a thing!)

Denise_cindie

Item: Master Food Styling Class II Workshop, January 31 & Feb 1, 2009, Los Angeles, California.

Offered By: Mattbites and the amazing Denise Vivaldo of Food Fantatics

Prize Code: UW01

Ok, boy I feel like I scored big time with this one here. Cuz I did. And you want this prize. You really really want this prize. I mean, only IF you're interested in learning about food styling as a career as well as getting hands-on experience. And because my friend Denise and Cindie are so delightful you'll be entertained the entire time. But don't take my word for it. You should read what other bloggers like Lara and Bea have said about these classes.

You're bidding on a two-day workshop in Los Angeles, California. In this 2-day seminar you'll learn about styling, plating and garnishing breakfast foods as well as working with real ice cream and frozen desserts. Although this is a level 2 class offered by Denise I'm more than positive you'll get so much from this workshop. And if you're a food blogger chances are you have some experience with getting food on your plate to look good already. Please note that this is a new curriculum not offered before so it's extra exciting!

To top it all off I'll be there the entire time taking pictures of the class and working with you on the photo aspect of it all.

Please note that if you're not in Los Angeles you will be responsible for all your own expenses like travel and accommodations.

Item: $100 King Arthur Flour Gift Card

Offered By: Susan at Wild Yeast

Prize Code: UW04

Ok bakers, start your mixers! This is an excellent gift for anyone who bakes or if you're like me would LIKE to bake. A great idea and you'll have enough great flour to make all sorts of amazing things. Or again, if you're like me, you'll have enough flour to evenly coat your countertop or floor. I am a messy baker indeed. Make sure to visit Susan at her blog for more info!

Update! Susan says "I just wanted to let you know that the King Arthur gift card can be
used for a lot besides flour — they carry a huge array of baking and
cooking tools, specialty baking ingredients, and books. So pretty much
anyone who cooks could use this."  Even better, don't you think?

Cuisinart200

Item: Cuisinart ICE-50 Ice Cream Maker

Offered By: David Lebovitz, some random internet fella but I hear he's aaaaight

Prize Code: UW05

Does everyone know about my torrid love affair with David Lebovitz? That's ok if you don't, he doesn't know either. But it's true. I love this man. And I suspect you do too. And why? Well for me it's the way he washes his dishes in the bathtub (apparently a French thing?) and writes these books that are filled with amazing recipes that hit the mark each and every time. I bet you also didn't know that I personally hold him responsible for about 7 lbs of ice cream weight (it's what I called it after his last book arrived) because not only did we buy his book but we rushed out and purchased the Cuisinart ICE-50 on his suggestion. This machine is a dream come true. It's been the best ice cream maker we've ever used and makes indulging that much easier because let's face it, it's important, no? So yes, you'll want to bid on this. But remember, you must be in the US as this baby ain't light. Neither am I. Please excuse me now, I've got internet love letters to send to a certain Jewish American living in Paris.

Popcorn

Item: Popcorn Gift Set

Offered By: Lara Ferroni of Cook & Eat

Prize Code: UW06

The details for this item are coming shortly but I can tell you that it will most likely include a book, truffle oil, popcorn, bowls and some extra stuff. But the bonus is that the Popcorn book was photographed by Lara herself! I own a copy that I picked up at Crate and Barrel and it's GORGEOUS. Heck, the book alone is a great prize, not to mention all the other stuff she's including. I'll update the photo as soon as possible!

Here's what Lara says:

When I found out I was taking photos for a book on cookbook
entirely based on popcorn, I was a little stunned. I tried to think of
even 10 recipes, and came up short. But after shooting over 20
different recipes for this popcorn book (which contains over 60
recipes), not only was I not sick of popcorn, I had an entirely new
appreciation for the treat. Here are a few ideas: popcorn s'mores!
popcorn bananas foster!  Gorgonzola and Green Onion! Popcorn Shrimp with popcorn in the batter! I've pulled together this simple popcorn package to let you share in some my new discoveries.  This kit includes:

16 oz. of premium white popcorn
1 oz. asiago and cracked black pepper seasoning
1.6 oz. tangy dill and garden herb seasoning
1.8 oz. sweet and salty kettle corn seasoning
a small jar of my homemade zhatar mix
4 oz. grapeseed oil sprizter
8.45 oz Urbani White Truffle Oil
A copy of Popcorn
One large bright red popcorn bowl

If I was a selfish man I'd say NO! THIS IS MINE! But alas, I am not. But I want this. DESPERATELY.  AND IT WILL BE MINE. Because I'd love to have dinner with Clare and I'd like to hang at Chateau Marmont. Here's what she has to offer:

in West Hollywood. Chef Carolynn Spence (formerly of Spotted Pig in

(unless you plan on being in LA sometime – that's fine too!).

Included in the dinner will be a box of treats created by yours truly, that you can take home with you.

ACII

Item: Pork! Pork! Pork!

Offered By: Hobson's Choice of No Choice At All

Prize Code: UW30

5 lbs. of pancetta and 3 lbs. of lardo (a.k.a. "Iowa White") from La Quercia in Iowa. Of course, this being such a special fundraiser, we had to offer up "special" pork. La Quercia, with the help of Becker Lane Organic Farm in Dyersville, IA (where Field of Dreams was filmed), has raised a limited number of organic, heirloom, Berkshire hogs on an acorn diet.

The Berkshire breed is already widely renowned for its silky meat and generous, flavorful fat, but when these pigs are treated to an acorn diet, the result is a truly heavenly hog-eating experience. This is a centuries-old tradition that echos that of the highly prized Iberico Bellota in Spain. The taste is sublime and unlike anything you've ever tried.  This is one prize that is almost impossible to find anywhere but the country's best restaurants. (NOTE: Prize will not be available until April, products are still in the process of being cured.)  SHIPPING LIMITED TO UNITED STATES LOWER 48

Lonzino-cured

Item: Wild Game Charcuterie

Offered By: Hank of Honest Food

Prize Code: UW36

Check out what Hank says. I'm drooling.

"Wild game charcuterie. Yep. I will make the winner a gift basket of yummy sausage-y things that I have hunted myself. My plan is to offer the winner the following:

    * Canada Goose “prosciutto”
    * Wild Boar lonzino, which is air-cured pork loin (pictured above)
    * Wild duck salami, done as a soppresata
    * 2-3 pounds of fresh wild boar sausages, done to order — that’s right, you get to pick what kind I make.

I pretty sure I don’t need to tell you that there is nowhere else in America you can get this deal. You cannot buy true wild game — it’s illegal. The only way to get your hands on charcuterie like this is to know a hunter who can make salami: That’d be me."
